Sorry to have missed a few planned installments. I had a few “priority tasks” that came up at work. You know those projects where you have to drop everything else to deal with them…
It was 3 of those.
I was due to do a priorities vs goals post anyway, so this is just a little ahead of schedule. I wanted to cover it because it’s so easy to set off confidently down the road towards our lofty goals and then almost immediately get blindsided by something that just can’t be ignored.
The risk is that you’re blown so far off track that you lose sight of where you were headed. The wind is knocked out of your sails and you’re left in the doldrums. To mix metaphors without shame.
So how do you get back to where you need to be? A course readjustment is called for. If the situation is likely to arise again, plan for it. The rational part of my mind, when it had time to gather its thoughts, went to this:
Accept it could and probably will happen again
Re-evaluate goals and plans in this light
In the new schedule, ensure progress is still made on every front
The last point is probably the most important. Make sure something is done, no matter how small, towards all goals. Standing still is slower, but you have still “banked” previous progress made. Keep building on that. The only way to go backwards is to let the goals fade back into obscurity. That would be a shame!
If all we have is right now, this very moment, then it shouldn’t matter that your last week’s worth of plans were scuppered. We have this week. We have now.
If we can accept that the sea can sometimes be choppy and blow us off course, we can continue with confidence knowing that the wind will soon blow our way again.
Keep meditating, keep your goals fresh in mind and stay confident. This way your goals and milestones will still be reached in good time, and it’ll be much easier to stay the course. And newsletters will get written.
